A Small Light in a Dark Room

A Small Light in a Dark Room is a sculpture commissioned by the Fremont Arts Council for the 2024 public art festival, Luminata. The work is 10′ H x 10′ W x 20′ L fabricated with cotton textile, steel, and holiday lights. The piece is inspired by Miep Gies, the Dutch citizen who hid Anne Frank and her family from Nazi capture for two years. Of her remarkable courage she said, “I did what I had to do because it was the right thing to do, that is all. We are all ordinary people, but even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can– within their own small ways – turn on a small light in a dark room.”

Development

The piece meditates on the striking similarity between neuron structures in the brain and the distribution of galaxy clusters in the universe. The sculpture makes visible the astronomical odds of being both a witness and a participant of creation.
